Shelter operators nationwide say they are being inundated with stray pets abandoned by families that have lost their homes or dropped off by owners looking to cut costs in any way possible.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I can't believe most of those cases are matters of necessity. Maybe a few, but most of them could cut costs, get cheaper pet food, and at least keep their pets with them while they get back on their feet. For sure, there's NO excuse for simply walking away from your pets when the going gets tough. I just adopted a puppy who had been abandoned (with 11 other dogs) after a home was foreclosed. She's fine, but some of the others didn't make it.

I am very saddened to read this But I do have someone to blame and that is the mortgage companies. With the increase in rates and no help from them people have given up their homes cause they can not take the stress away. The mortgage companies should consider that people are struggling and make life a little easier. Help is what is needed but these companies are closed minded and refuse to help. Think of all the hurt families have to endure by leaving their pet behind not to mention if there is children involved the heartache of uprooting them is a stress that they don't need. Most people move to apartments where pets are not allowed or there is a deposit of 500.00 just to keep a pet in the apartment. I do not condone people leaving their pets at their foreclosed homes I just think that this should be prevented. People are running around without options and there is no help in site. I wonder sometimes if the people that work for these mortgage companies sleep well at night or even have families because I know that I would not be able to sleep well knowing that I have destroyed a families hopes and dreams. The time is now to stand up and help those families we are so busy aiding other countries we neglect to see what is going on in our own backyard. SAVE THE FAMILIES AND THEIR PETS

I am saddened to read this but I do have someone to blame and that is the mortgage companies. This could all be prevented if the mortgage companies could help families instead of putting their homes on foreclosure. THe problems Americans are facing is that they can not afford their mortgage payments due to high interest rates and no help from the mortgage companies. The solution is easy make the effort to help instead of being close minded. Communication is the key these families are giving up because there is no help at all. Most families move to apartments where they charge a fee of 500.00 to keep the pet in the apartment most do not accept them. Although I do not condone leaving the pets behind I also feel that it could be prevented. I sometimes wonder how these people that work for these mortgage companies sleep at night or if they have families I know that I would not be able to work for them knowing that I have to destroy families's dreams in order to make a living. Its funny how we are quick to aid other countries that are suffering but we fail to realize what exactly is going on right under our noses. The time is now for change help is needed and soon otherwise we would be a country that will be homeless and starving.

When people loose their home they need to rent. One of the biggest problems people face is that most rentals do not allow pets. If you look in the paper 99.9% of adds say NO PETS ALLOWED! This is not an excuse to abandon a pet, but it has made people do the unthinkable.

I find it HORRIBLE that people just leave their pets behind!!! These are DOMESTIC animals which means they DEPEND on their humans, just like kids depend on their parents however if a child were abandoned it could knock on doors and say "excuse me I'm hungry and thirsty or I'm cold and need shelter" animals can't. I agree with Tess, these mortgage brokers who took their big commisions without being sure the family could actually AFFORD these places should be ashamed of themselves!!! They should have to pay back EVERY SINGLE commision they recieved on any home that is foreclosed on and put it in a fund for the VICTIMS of this nightmare.

Pets are not expendable, if they are members of the family------overpriced mortgages are.
